Puente - An exhibition of Cuban artists
September 20 - November, 24 2013
Opening Reception: September 20, 5-7pm

An exhibition highlighting emerging and established artists from Cuba.
HDAC will be partnering with several organizations to offer Cuban related programs, including a guided art and architectural tour of Havana, Cuba. This is an incredible opportunity to see some of the best contemporary Cuban artwork being produced today. The seven renowned Cuban artists in this exhibition were all represented in the 2012 Havana Biennial, and two of the artists (Sandra Ramos and Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons) represented Cuba in this year's Venice Biennale. Photographs, large-scale drawings on canvas, sculptures, and prints encapsulate the island of Cuba through the artists' individual perspectives. The artists address Cuban culture and Cuba's political environment, both historically and in its current state. Some of the work addresses the conflict of leaving the island – like Sandra Ramos's images of passports, bridges, and eyes looking out – while others work to expose our stereotypes – like Adrian Fernandez's large photographs of showgirls at the infamous cabaret "Tropicana".
These personal narratives thread their way through political complexities and often surprise us by turning around our own perceptions of Cuba. What do we understand of Cuban history? What do we know of contemporary Cuba? In our increasingly global world, as bridges open we are able to learn, share and experience more. This exhibition provides an opportunity to gain access to artists work from one island on a global scale, providing insight into contemporary Cuba.
