This class will explore the fundamentals of the hand-building process, working with clay off the wheel to construct coiled, slab-built and carved clay objects. At the end of the class students will be able to bring home their fired pieces. Each week a new process and object will be introduced and practiced, ranging from bowls, plates and boxes, to figurines, masks and using materials found in nature. The purpose of this class is to introduce students to forming with clay off the wheel, understanding the qualities of clay and exploring processes such as slab and coil building to create imaginative hand-made objects.
Please note: Due to the time necessary for proper drying and firing of ceramic artwork, students should not expect to bring home finished work at the end of the class. All ceramic pieces will be fired and packaged within 2 weeks of the end of class, and students will be notified via email as soon as they are available for pickup.
