Studio School at The Current is a unique, after-school art intensive rooted in the traditions of Europe’s oldest art academies, such as the Academy in Paris. Founded on the core belief that art-making not only consists of a set of teachable skills, but is also an essential and elevated course of study, The Academy and its Art Salons functioned as the cultural center of the European art world for centuries.
Our mastery-based curriculum breaks down the components of visual art-making and gives students the tools they need to realize their artistic visions. Students will develop the skills and confidence to realize their artistic visions through technique-focused exercises, the study of contemporary and historical artists, and iterative processes.
Led by Master Potter, Maddy Bertrand-Gerndt, our Ceramic Studio School is an opportunity for students to build their skills in the Clay Studio. Working in both handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques, students will develop a firm understanding of the stages of clay, glaze and underglaze interactions, and the myriad of vessel-making techniques used in cultures around the world. Participants will work with Maddy to develop a thematic body of work that highlights their newfound skills and their unique artistic sensibilities.
Perfect for the dedicated artist in your life, these extended programs allow students to dive deeper into the concepts and skills that represent the core and center of art-making. Students will also participate in peer feedback sessions, analyze famous works of art, and have the opportunity to display their work as part of the annual Student Art Show at The Current.
