*New* Extended Deadline: February 9, 2025

Exhibition dates:  June 21 – October 18, 2025

The Current, a center for contemporary art in Stowe, Vermont, invites artists to submit proposals for the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition Exposed. Selected works will be exhibited throughout the village of Stowe.

Art can be a meaning- or change-maker, a cultivator of conversation, or a way to participate in and interpret the world. At its best, art connects us to where we are in time or place, whether physical or cerebral, political or personal. It connects us with the people and the world around us, asking questions and encouraging empathy and understanding.

Open Call

A portion of Exposed will feature invited artists and works selected by  Exposed curator Rachel Moore. Past invited artists include Chakaia Booker, Woody De Othello, Hank Willis Thomas, and Oren Pinhassi, among others. Additional artworks will be selected by a panel of jurors through an open call.

The 2025 Exposed Jurors include DJ Hellerman, Deputy Director & Senior Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and Lucas Cowan, who currently holds positions as Curator at Large for Crystal Bridges Museum in Bentonville, AR and Curator of Millennium Park Foundation in Chicago, IL.

In addition to sculptural objects, we encourage innovative and broad approaches to sculpture, such as, but not limited to, site-specific installations or interventions and participatory or exchange-based works. There may also be opportunities for artists to collaborate with local businesses.**

Sculptures will be installed on The Current grounds and along Stowe’s Main Street, as assigned by the curator. The average anticipated audience for this area during the summer is approximately half a million.

Artists may apply in any medium that can endure the outdoors in a public setting for four months. All object-based sculptures must be securely mounted to the ground at the designated site, and all work must be made safe for children and pedestrian traffic. All work will be reviewed by a civil engineer.***

We will offer each artist a $1,000 stipend to help offset transportation costs. Although there are no geographic restrictions for applicants, artists are responsible for transportation, installation, and de-installation of their work, and for returning the site to its original condition. Artwork will be insured by The Current while exhibited on site; the artist is responsible for the work during transit, installation, and de-installation.

Each sculpture will be identified with a nameplate provided by The Current. ‘Walking tour’ maps will locate the artwork and identify the artists, audio cell phone tours will be provided, and a comprehensive and interactive website for the exhibition will be available to the public. The Current will send PR kits with information on the artists to the media. The exhibit will be publicized on The Current website and featured through Bloomberg Connects. The Current staff will monitor the condition of the sculpture on a weekly basis; however, the artists are responsible for repairs or maintenance of their work. The Art Center will produce a full-color catalog and professional photography of all the sculptures for inclusion in the catalog once the work is installed. Assistance from participating artists is expected.

The artist is responsible for assigning a retail price, from which The Current claims a 40% commission. For further information, please see our website: www.thecurrentnow.org.  Contact us at submissions@thecurrentnow.org with any questions regarding the application process or to obtain more detailed information about sites and potential collaborations with businesses to create a more specific proposal. For non-object-based work, prior consultation with the curator is encouraged.

Artists will be informed by March 1, 2025. Installation will take place June 4-11, 2025 and de-installation will take place between October 19-25, 2025. Artists are asked to be at the opening reception to speak about their work on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

** Please contact submissions@thecurrentnow.org for more details, photographs, and ways in which collaboration can occur.

***The Curator reserves the right to not include work if the work is deemed unfit to exhibit.
