Deadline: June 4, 2022

Exhibition dates: August 20 – October 22, 2022

The Current, a center for contemporary art in Stowe, Vermont, invites artists to submit proposals for the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition, Exposed, throughout the town of Stowe. The theme for this year will be Dreams. Please submit work or proposals appropriate to this theme.

This year’s theme: Dreams

From last year’s exhibition that focused on language and communication with others, this next iteration of Exposed will focus on identity, contemplation, and the importance of rest or dreams for the healing of the subconscious.

Open Call

A portion of Exposed will feature works from invited artists, selected by the Curator of Exposed. Past exhibiting artists include Jaume Plensa, Tony Tasset, Lionel Smit, Mark di Suvero among others. Artists submitting to the open call portion will be selected by a panel of jurors.

In addition to sculptural objects, we encourage innovative and broad approaches to sculpture such as, but not limited to: site-specific installations or interventions, and participatory or exchange based works. There are also opportunities for artists to collaborate with local businesses.**

Sculptures will be installed on The Current grounds, along Main Street, and along the Recreation Path in the town of Stowe, Vermont. The Exposed curator will assign the sites to the artists. The average audience for this area during the summer is 250,000.

Artists may apply in any medium that can endure the outdoors in a public setting for four months. All object-based sculptures must be securely mounted to the ground at the designated site, and all work must be made safe for children and pedestrian traffic. All work will be reviewed by a civil engineer.***

We will be offering a $1000 stipend to each artist to help offset transportation costs. Although there are no geographic restrictions for applicants, artists are responsible for transportation, installation, and de-installation of their work, as well as returning the site to its original condition. Installation dates will be July 30–August 5.

Each sculpture will be identified with a nameplate provided by The Current. ‘Walking tour’ maps locating the artwork and identifying the artists, audio cell phone tours and a comprehensive and interactive website of the exhibition will be available for the public. The Current will send PR kits with information on the artists to the media. The exhibit will be publicized on The Current website. The Current staff will monitor the condition of the sculpture on a weekly basis, however the artists are responsible for repairs or maintenance of their work. The Art Center will produce a full color catalog and professional photography of all the sculptures for inclusion in the catalog once the work is installed. Assistance from participating artists is expected.

The artist is responsible for assigning a retail price, from which The Current claims 40% commission. Contact us at with any questions regarding the application process or to obtain more detailed information about sites and potential collaboration with businesses in order to create a more specific proposal. For non-object based work, prior consultation with the curator is encouraged.

** Please contact for more details, photographs, and ways in which collaboration can occur. Collaborations have occurred in storefront windows and with a local coffee shop. See Lora Lode's Public Ordinance Cups for an example of collaboration.

***The Curator reserves the right to not include work if the work is deemed unfit to exhibit.
