@giacomo_dorlando’s practice focuses on coastal environments where ecological change intersects with labour, subsistence, and local knowledge. Working across Southeast Asia, he documents community-led processes such as seagrass replanting in Thailand and mangrove restoration in the Philippines, alongside small-scale fishing economies adapting to declining biodiversity and changing coastlines.

In this conversation with @belenverar, he discusses his field-based approach, the role of collaboration with local communities, and the conditions under which these images are produced. He reflects on image-making as a form of translation across ecosystems and lived realities, addressing how photography can register environmental change alongside the social structures that shape it.

A powerful week at The Current.

On Tuesday, interdisciplinary artist Mary Mattingly joined art historian Dr. Julie Reiss for a conversation about art, climate change, and the evolving role of artists in responding to ecological crisis.

Throughout the week, Mary also led cyanotype workshops with 2nd–4th grade students from Stowe Elementary School, where students experimented with composition, pattern, and sunlight to create their own prints, and asked thoughtful questions about her artistic process.

And tonight, our winter series concludes with a student poetry reading featuring 7th and 8th grade students from Stowe Middle School. Inspired by Water Writes the Garden, their poems explore climate change, interconnected life systems, and water as storyteller and timekeeper.
