A powerful week at The Current.
On Tuesday, interdisciplinary artist Mary Mattingly joined art historian Dr. Julie Reiss for a conversation about art, climate change, and the evolving role of artists in responding to ecological crisis.
Throughout the week, Mary also led cyanotype workshops with 2nd–4th grade students from Stowe Elementary School, where students experimented with composition, pattern, and sunlight to create their own prints, and asked thoughtful questions about her artistic process.
And tonight, our winter series concludes with a student poetry reading featuring 7th and 8th grade students from Stowe Middle School. Inspired by Water Writes the Garden, their poems explore climate change, interconnected life systems, and water as storyteller and timekeeper.

Matthew Ward from the Vermont Department of Health and the Medical Reserve Corp and Sarah Henshaw from the Lamoille Area Recovery Network will discuss their organizations' missions and impact on communities affected by flooding and flooding preparedness, response, and recovery. They will tie the increasing likelihood of floods to climate change and promote ways for community members to increase their civic engagement and contribute to the recovery of those with unmet needs through volunteer opportunities and donations.

Today as we honor the work and life of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., we reflect on our own values and strategic plan at The Current. Our commitment to addressing issues of climate justice, social justice, inclusivity, and equity through art, action, and informed discourse can be seen through our exhibitions and public programs. This winter, The Current presents two exhibitions exploring our relationship with water, from poetic reflection to lived reality. Celebrate the opening of "Water Writes the Garden" and Symbiosis THIS THURSDAY, January 15, from 5–7 p.m.. Free and open to all.
