Explore the rich tradition of masks from cultures across Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in this imaginative clay class. Drawing inspiration from global myths and stories, you'll design and create your own expressive masks using natural and found materials. With a focus on handbuilding techniques, we'll learn to construct forms using a base armature and add surface details to bring our creations to life. This class offers a strong foundation in off-the-wheel clay work while encouraging cultural exploration and personal creativity. You'll take home your own fired, one-of-a-kind ceramic mask at the end of the session.
Please note: Due to the time necessary for proper drying and firing of ceramic artwork, students should not expect to bring home finished work at the end of the class. All ceramic pieces will be fired and packaged within 2 weeks of the end of class, and students will be notified via email as soon as they are available for pickup.
