This clay class for inquiring minds seeks to answer questions such as, “Where does clay come from?”, “How is it made?”, and “What can we use it for?” through a hands-on exploration of the medium in question. Students in this class will follow the journey of unassuming minerals through space and time as they trace the origins of clay deposits in Vermont and create their own ceramic sculptures and artworks. From glaciers to underwater volcanoes, the minerals that make up our clay have seen it all! Drawing inspiration from natural rock formations and ancient landscapes as well as contemporary ceramic artists such as Laura Cannamela, participants in this class will create sculptures, vessels, and tiles that explore the geology of clay and the extraordinary processes behind its formation.
