In this innovative class, students will create original mosaic artworks using a variety of materials, from glass and stone to recycled plastic, textiles, and more. Discover traditional mosaic motifs of the ancient world and the cutting-edge artists who are creating groundbreaking, ecologically mindful mosaics in the 21st century. Participants will investigate the multifaceted mosaics of Takako Hirai, a contemporary Japanese mosaic artist whose layered meanings and subtle forms bring her work to the forefront of the medium. Taking inspiration from Hirai’s work, students in this course will create two- and three-dimensional mosaic artworks focusing on the full integration of found materials in their work.
