Winter Adult + Teen Workshops
Open to “advanced beginners” and above, this one-day class will teach you to loosen up and widen your options for adding texture and organic movement to your pots. Working with various wood blocks and a torch (or heat gun), you will emboss the walls of your pots and learn to alter the form while the pot is still freshly thrown. The element of heat brings stability and structure to a freshly thrown pot, allowing you to experiment and push your forms in a manner not possible with a soft clay wall. You will learn to work with the surface in its semi-leather hard state, discovering new ways to think about curves, overhangs, and “gravity fooling” options. You will leave with new ideas and a few tricks, expanding your toolbox of pottery-making approaches.
Scholarships and sliding-scale tuition rates are available. The workshop schedule will include a morning artist talk and demo, a 30-minute catered lunch, and afternoon hands-on creating and experimenting time. A 25-pound bag of clay and a catered lunch will be provided to all participants.
Back again in 2024, this popular ceramics class is perfect for beginners and returning students alike! Teaching Artist Brandy Boden creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere in the Ceramics Studio as she guides students through the fundamentals of throwing, trimming, and glazing, allowing time and space for experimentation and connection throughout. A perfect antidote to the dark nights of winter, this evening class offers an amazing opportunity for connecting with new friends, embracing your creative self, and, of course, playing in the mud.
Please be aware that due to the unpredictable nature of winter weather in Vermont, some sessions of this class may be canceled or rescheduled. We will do our best to provide 4-6 hours advance notice in the event of a canceled class and prompt communication regarding rescheduled class sessions.
Note: Students enrolled in ceramics classes at The Current receive one bag of clay as a part of their tuition and are granted access to The Current’s Ceramic Open Studio Hours for the duration of the class. Additional clay can be purchased through our website or in The Current’s Main Office.
